Breaking Down Botox: A Mini Guide to Smooth Skin

So what is Botox?
OK, let’s break it down quicker than you can say ‘Courtney Cox went a little too far.’
Botox is the trade name for botulinum toxin.
It’s a purified protein that interferes with the normal transmission of signals between the nerve and the muscle. It prevents the muscles from working or contracting and this improves and relaxes frown lines. The effects are only temporary as the body breaks down this protein.

How does it work?

A very small amount of the drug is injected into specific frown muscles causing the lines and wrinkles. Yep, there’s needles (but only tiny ones). Once the muscles relax, the overlying wrinkles may soften or reduce. The treatment takes around 10-15 minutes, is minimally invasive and relatively pain free. You may notice the results of the treatment in just 2-3 days. The effects of the treatment can last from 8-16 weeks. Which is perfect if you have an event you want to look smashing for without the long haul commitment (pretty sure I hear wedding bells ringing loudly).

What are the risks?

As with any cosmetic procedure, occasional side effects can occur. These can include headaches, pain, bruising, swelling, itchiness or redness at the injection site. Muscle weakness such as drooping eyelids or eyebrows along with swelling of the eyelids or eye muscles may also occur. Nothing life-threatening girls, just a bit discomfort is the most you can expect.

Who should start using it?

Anyone who is concerned about facial lines and wrinkles.
It may be used as a preventative measure to stop the wrinkles forming in the first place. What you really want to achieve is a natural softening of the lines not the ‘frozen’, deer-in-a-headlight kind of look. It’s both art and science.
