What is rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic and inflammatory skin condition that primarily affects the face. It is characterized by persistent redness, flushing, visible blood vessels (telangiectasia), and sometimes the development of small red bumps and pustules and even facial swelling.

Rosacea typically occurs on the central part of the face, including the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin. Rosacea symptoms may flare up for weeks and then go away for a while which is why it can sometimes be mistaken for acne.

Rosacea can affect people of all ages, but it is most commonly seen in adults between the ages of 30 and 50, particularly those with fair skin. It tends to be more prevalent in women, although men may experience more severe symptoms.

What are the causes of rosacea?

Doctors don’t actually know the main cause of rosacea, but it is thought to be hereditary, possibly due to environmental factors, an overactive immune system or a combination of all of these. Rosacea is not contagious or from poor hygiene. Rosacea flare-ups can sometimes be triggered by spicy foods or hot drinks.

Rosacea Symptoms

The signs and symptoms of rosacea can vary from person to person, but the most common ones include:

  1. Facial redness: Persistent redness on the central part of the face, often resembling a blush or sunburn.

  2. Flushing: Episodes of sudden and temporary redness or warmth of the face.

  3. Visible blood vessels: Small, dilated blood vessels (telangiectasia) that are visible on the skin's surface.

  4. Papules and pustules: Some individuals with rosacea may develop small red bumps or pus-filled pimples, similar to acne.

  5. Thickened skin: In some cases, the skin on the nose may become thickened and enlarged, a condition known as rhinophyma.

  6. Eye problems: Approximately half of people with rosacea experience eye symptoms, such as dryness, burning, stinging, and irritation. This condition is known as ocular rosacea.

What are the best treatments for rosacea?

Rosacea can make people feel self-conscious and we understand the impacts this can have. If you are concerned about rosacea we are here to help! Rosacea treatment options vary depending on the underlying cause and severity of the condition. Often before we begin any rosacea treatments we require an in-person look at your skin. The best way to do this is to book a Skin Analysis Appointment with us. During this initial consultation, our qualified skincare experts can come up with an individualised plan to address your concerns.

LED Therapy

This is a light-based therapy that utilises high intensity light emitting diodes (LED's) ranging from red, yellow and blue to gently and painlessly stimulate the skin. These treatments help reduce rosacea, acne and hyperpigmentation and to detoxify and increase your skin firmness. Numerous studies including this one by Dr. Michael Hamblin of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital have found light therapies like this to be rejuvenating, stimulating and healing for the skin.

The treatment involves laying under the LED lamp for a pre-determined number of minutes usually 15, 20 or 30 minutes. This kind of rosacea treatment itself is found to be relatively relaxing. For more information visit our LED Treatments page.

Laser Therapy

Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy or laser therapy is commonly used in rosacea treatment. It is an effective treatment option for managing the symptoms of rosacea. Laser therapy utilizes specific wavelengths of light to target and reduce the redness, visible blood vessels, and other skin issues associated with rosacea. Laser therapy can provide long-lasting results and improve the overall appearance and texture of the skin.

During laser therapy, a concentrated beam of light is delivered to the targeted areas of the skin affected by rosacea. The light energy is absorbed by the hemoglobin in the blood vessels, causing them to coagulate and collapse. This process helps to reduce the appearance of visible blood vessels and redness. A treatment cycle of 4-6 treatments spaced two to three weeks apart is usually required to reach your best possible outcome.
