Understanding Injectables

Injectables for wrinkles, anti-aging injections, anti-ageing injections in wagga wagga, needles for wrinkles

Wondering why you don’t ever see any advertisements for specific brands of injectables or cosmetic treatments in Wagga? To learn more about what injectables actually are, why common injectable brand names cannot be advertised here and what we call it instead, read on.

Restricted Advertising Rules

It’s not just Wagga, advertising brand names created by pharmaceutical companies (like the one we all know and hear!) is actually restricted across Australia. Any prescription medicine, like injectables, falls under Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA).

Under TGA advertising rules, brand names cannot be used and all ads should be clear, accurate, and must not mislead or deceive people about the qualities of a particular medicine. The TGA says their restrictions are in place to protect the health and safety of consumers.

There are three main brands of anti-wrinkle injections in Australia made by pharmaceutical giants Allergan, Galderma and Merz. All three of these companies have brands that are TGA-approved and these companies need to provide extensive research to prove their products are safe, plus abide by strict laws before their injectables can be used.

What can we say in our advertising?

In Australia, we can use more general terms that are appropriate to describe the results of a particular therapy or treatment. We are allowed to say things like:
- anti-wrinkle Injections
- anti-ageing treatments/injections
- cosmetic injections
- injections/treatments for lips
- treatments for crow’s feet
- Injectables
- Dermal fillers

What are injectables Made From?

Cosmetic injectables are actually a protein made from a specific, common and natural bacteria found in plants, soil, and water. The bacteria produce a chemical which is then purified, refined, tested and branded as you now know it. This chemical blocks the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, causing short-term muscle paralysis that lasts for several months. Through its popularity as a cosmetic treatment, the common name for this product became the ‘face’ of the medicine (pun intended!)

How do injectables work?

Once a small amount is injected, it blocks the tiny chemical signals from the nerves. This causes the muscles to relax, stopping the skin from contracting and folding which prevents new lines from forming or becoming more obvious.

What else is it used for?

Doctors use it in small injectable doses to treat a variety of different health problems and have been doing so for the last 30 years. It was actually first used to treat strabismus (crossed eyes) and has been used since to help with things like chronic migraines, neck spasms, overactive bladder and excessive sweating.

How Long Does One Treatment Last?

The effects of each treatment are not permanent as the body breaks down this protein, however having treatments regularly will gradually weaken the muscle, and reduce the need (in either volume or time) of ongoing treatments. Generally, the use of injectables for cosmetic purposes can last between 3- 6 months.

Alternative Anti-Aging Treatments

Other treatments include dermal fillers, which are different to what we call ‘injectables’ altogether. It’s an injection of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that is normally found in the body, mainly in the fluids in your joints or eyes. Hyaluronic acid may sound intimidating; however, its purpose is to cushion the surrounding tissues and it plays a vital role in keeping our skin cells volumized and hydrated. The results typically last from 12-18 months depending on the area treated, choice of filler, and how fast the patient’s body absorbs the filler.
